We welcome children to attend our worship services or children's church at Benton Chapel. Following the 9:30 a.m. service from the Sunday after Labor Day through mid-May, we offer Sunday School for children at 11:00 a.m. at the A-frame Chapel, which is a short walk across campus from Benton.
If you are new to St. A's or your child is new to Sunday School, please email Susan Sluser,
Children's Nursery at Benton Chapel
A nursery is available for infants age birth to 3 years old during the 9:30 am Sunday service. Sarah Yandell manages our nursery, so look for her each Sunday as you drop your little ones off at room G28 on the first floor of the Divinity School before heading upstairs to Benton Chapel.
Children ages 3 to 9 years old are invited to attend Children's Church. After the reading of the gospel, the children process to the church narthex (front door area) where they will meet Susan Sluser. She leads them downstairs for a special child-friendly worship service. Snacks are provided. The children return to their parents during the Offertory.
Children's Nursery during the Sunday School hour
During adult Sunday School at the A-frame Chapel, a nursery is available for newborn infants to age 3 years. It is in the student lounge at the rear of the building and is staffed by Vanderbilt undergraduate students. All have completed the "Safeguarding God's Children" training required by the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
(for children ages 3 to 12 years old)
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd offers a hands-on learning experience in classrooms called Atriums. Begun by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew scholar, and her co-worker, Gianna Gobbi, the curriculum uses the Montessori method while being rooted in the Bible and liturgy of the church. If you are interested in becoming a certified teacher of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (and we need more teachers!) please contact Susan Sluser at .
