What is Room In The Inn (RITI)?

RITI is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "provide programs that emphasize human development and recovery through education, self-help and work, centered in community and long term support for those who call the streets of Nashville home." Congregations of all sizes and beliefs are called upon in the winter months to help provide food and shelter for these men. RITI is located at 705 Drexel St, Nashville, TN 37203; (615) 251-9791.
 
At St Augustine's, we host 12 men at the A-frame chapel every Sunday night from around Thanksgiving through the New Year. We prepare food, provide a warm place to sleep, and keep them company. All of this is done in the spirit of respect, dignity, and compassion.

Who can volunteer and how long does it take?
Anyone! From small jobs like setting out towels to team efforts like making 12 sack lunches to bigger projects like making a full dinner, we have something for everyone. Seriously, we want families and friends to come together to serve. Want to have a philosophical discussion with your teenager? Let them share a meal with someone struggling with homelessness. Want to show your 7 year old how to make a bed? No problem, we have that too!
 
By volunteering, you are only responsible for your assigned job on that particular day. Each week, we will have a new set of volunteers. The time it takes to volunteer depends on your particular duty and the number of people helping you. Also, some volunteers choose to cook at home as opposed to doing it at the Chapel (i.e.; they bring prepared meals to the A-frame and re-heat them there). It does not take long to do such things as make the beds or lay out toiletries. Ultimately, the amount of time you spend on your job is up to you, and everyone is welcome to stay through dinner.
 
Overview of Duties- up to 15 volunteers needed each week
 
Sunday Evenings
  1. 4:00 p.m. - Prep (up to 2 volunteers): Responsible for making the beds, laying out toiletries, and setting up the dinner tables.
  2. 5:00 p.m. - Drivers (up to 3 volunteers): Responsible for transportation of 12 men from RITI at 705 Drexel St, Nashville, TN, 37203 to the A-frame.
  3. 5:30 p.m. - Dinner (up to 4 volunteers): Responsible for everything around serving a hearty dinner for 15 men (i.e. create menu, prepare meal, serve meal, and clean up afterwards). 
  4. 7:00 p.m. - Overnight Host (up to 2 volunteers, men preferred): Responsible for lights out around 8:00 p.m. and wake up at 4:30 a.m.

Monday Mornings

  1. 4:30 a.m. - Breakfast (up to 2 volunteers : Responsible for everything to provide a quick-serve breakfast for 15 men (i.e. create menu, prepare meal, serve meal, and clean up afterwards).
  2. 5:00 a.m.- Drivers (up to 3 volunteers): Responsible for transportation of 12 men the from A-frame to RITI at 705 Drexel St, Nashville, TN, 37203. 
  3. TBD- Lunch (up to 2 volunteers): Responsible for 12 sack lunches to include: 2 sandwiches, 1 fruit, 1 chip, 1 dessert, 1 drink.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! On behalf of the St. A's staff, I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped with Room In The Inn.  We had over 75 volunteers provide comfort, food, and shelter to nearly 100 men struggling with homelessness.  This includes a special impromptu Friday night in late January when temperatures were record cold.  It's humbling to be part of such a wonderful collection of people.  Again, thank you.
