NEW MUSICAL MASS BY PLAYWRIGHT AND HALL OF FAME SONGWRITER, MARCUS HUMMON, RAISES MONEY FOR  MUSICIANS IN NASHVILLE

A musical mass has been composed by Grammy-winning songwriter, and Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee, Marcus Hummon. Premiered by live stream on May 31st, the Christian Holy Day of Pentecost, “St. Augustine’s Mass,” and performed at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Chapel to honor community musicians, and to benefit its Musician’s Fund.

The Rev. Becca Stevens, Chaplain of St. Augustine’s Chapel, founder of the nonprofit, Thistle Farms, and spouse of Hummon, announced the mass. "Through countless fundraisers and mastery storytelling, the volunteer musicians at our chapel have helped launch and sustain multiple justice organizations and nonprofits,” she noted. “During Covid-19, most of these performing and recording musicians in Nashville have lost their livelihoods, and this is a beautiful opportunity to now support them.”

Says Hummon, "I have been working on the mass for a few months, and it seems like the right time to celebrate creativity and love that is moved by the spirit,” says Hummon. “Although classical at times, the music also borrows from folk and Celtic traditions, and it reflects the diversity of the St. Augustine’s Chapel and Nashville’s music community. It was a great gift to be commissioned by my own church community, and when writing lyrics or selecting liturgy, I reflected on its emphasis on social justice, caring for God’s creation, and on our calling to love.”

The Mass, featuring an acoustic ensemble following Covid-19 distancing protocols, streamed from St. Augustine’s Chapel on Sunday, 5/31/2020, 9:30am CDT. Nashville musicians include Chris Roberts, Dave Ragland, Rachel Beauregard, Hannah and Chris Meyers, Michael Kelsh, Laura Donohue, Susan Compton, and Luisa Lopez.

Thank you to the patrons who helped make the St. Augustine's mass possible: Tara Armistead, Carole and Keith Hagan, Connally and Charles Penley, Rita Pirkl and Maeve McConville, Laurie and Rob Platek, Julia and David Phillippi, and Bonnie and Ben Whitehouse.
